Konpani Soul City | KANYAR epilogue
A choreography by Didier Boutiana
Running time: 30 minutes
Suitable to all audiences
[KANYAR: outsider, dropout, thug]
In November 2017, choreographer Didier Boutiana presented his first solo work: KANYAR. A mouvement through the space, a dialogue between the dancer and a sculpture. Boutiana’s research questions the consequences of a refusal of conditioning, with a marginalisation of the individual as a possible consequence.
Based on this experience, the choreographer developed KANYAR epilogue – a resonance, a sort of echo to KANYAR. In latter work, the character left the audience; with KANYAR epilogue, the “4th wall” of the stage becomes a mirror, amplifying the emotions of a person experiencing a loss of references. A slight reference to today’s preachers. Boutiana abandoned the crossing of the theatre space, the audience faces a character seeking for orientation and articulation.
Reaching beyond dance, beyond performance and embodying transdenc
Au-delà de la danse, de la performance, de la transcendence, Didier Boutiana unveils as a fonkézèr* – poet – of gesture, of rhythm, of movement. His body becomes space, inside and outside, extrapolation, vibration, a silent cri within the night.
*Fonnkèr [bottom of the heart] is the traditional poetry from Reunion Island. Fonnkézèr is the poet and the vocal performancer, expressing his/her emotions, thoughts, torments and joys of life.

Didier Boutiana: binding socio-cultural commitment and artistic creation
Soul City has always been committed to its art, and actively participates – directly or indirectly – in encouraging social integration in youth and adults through education and know-how.
For the past two years, Soul City has been partaking in delinquency prevention by developing success oriented teaching methods with an emphasis on self-esteem.
Above and beyond the different actions taking place on the island, Soul City has been actively involved in social integration with minors who are placed under judicial protection, as well as with incarcerated individuals in the City of Le Port (Reunion Island).
The main objective is education with the hope of rekindling desire and interest in these people who are more than often cut off from society.
These encounters inspired Didier Boutiana to create a new performance entitled KANYAR, which he hopes to develop between 2016 -2017.
The programs carried out by the choreographer in these legal establishments allowed him to see this social phenomenon through a different angle. Because delinquency is something he knows personally, this milieu touches him and directly influences his personal choices. His involvement with this universe has largely conditioned his evolution in society.

The experience of collaborating with youth judicial programs over the past two years has inspired Didier Boutiana to create a solo piece. Delinquency can be perceived through group movement, but it is above all a personal and completely individual incarnation.
The choreographer shows particular interest in the individual: he who is faced with himself in moments of deep thought, satisfaction, doubt, certainty as well as memory. Nourished by his unique experiences, the piece is personal and explores his intimacy.

Dance classes & awareness
The company leads dance classes for a broad range of participants: discovery of hiphop dance styles and introduction to the specific choreographic expression of the presented performance. A body-focussed approach and an artistic research in order to comprehend the stage work.
The company offers a post-performance session of questions & answers. This participatory encounter offers a deeper vision and an exchange about choreography, dramaturgy and the creation process, but also about the audience’s reception of this work.
Social and community activites
Everyone has the right for an access to culture.
Director Didier Boutiana develops an important outreach work for young persons under judicial supervision, in order to develop a critical spirit, values and one’s free will. These workshops have an important education value, aiming to arise a genuine interest for those who experience a split with society.
Based on the eduction potential of this choreography, the company develops a training with values such as success, self-valorization and self-appreciation. An artistic discovery leading to more open-mindedness on oneself and the others.
